Under the Big Top - KidsCan Theatre Summer Theatre in the Park

Under the Big Top

The Pandemic is almost over and Dylan Briggs and Shay Bubbles, the Circus Manager and Ringmaster of Under the Big Top Circus, have a problem. These two life-long friends and business partners have got to get their circus up and running soon or go bust. “The Show Must Go On,” they say but how? When all of their performers quit at the start of Covid-19? How can they find enough acts to put on the Greatest Show, and fast?

In this one-week session of Summer Theatre in the Park, kids aged 8-12 will transform into a variety of familiar characters to help save Brigg’s and Bubble’s Under the Big Top circus. Using acting techniques, simple choreography, costumes and props, participants will have fun with friends as they learn how to put on a short play and build their self-confidence, and self-expression. The last day will run an extra hour to allow for a live, small-scale (workshop) performance for family and friends. Should restrictions on outdoor gatherings be reinstated, the kids’ work will be filmed, then a digital file to be sent to participants at a later date for their viewing pleasure.

At the end of the week, the kids will don costumes and/or accessories for a live, workshop performance of their work for family and friends. Many theatre skills will be learned throughout the session, but more importantly, fun will be had, and confidence will be built into each young creative who joins Drama Mama, Miss Erinn, for this experience.

The final class will run an extra hour in length to allow for our performance. Should restrictions on outdoor gatherings be reinstated, the kids’ work will be filmed, then a digital file to be sent to participants at a later date for their viewing pleasure. character-coaching

… because character matters

Why do certain characters in stories move us more than others?  What is it about their actions and personalities that make us stop and listen? What motivates them to do the things they do and why are many of them our heroes?

Character Coaching is a dynamic four-day program which sets out to help kids answer these questions about the various characters that matter to them.  Each day a KidsCAN Theatre Company Drama Mama will welcome participants to the Zoom platform to discuss their favorite character, be it from a book, movie, tv, or video game, etc.

Together, the kids will imaginatively explore their characters and in so doing will learn something new about themselves. Further creativity will lead them to the development of their own original characters, followed by a co-created script which will be presented on the last day.

Through this experiential workshop they will have contact with other youth, problem-solve, as well as learn and feel good about themselves, while having fun (even in a pandemic!).

“My twin boys have had Erinn Gleeson as their theater Coach for over 5 years. Erinn’s experience with children from ages 6-12 is amazing! She is patient and encouraging to all the kids.

My boys were shy and quiet kids, their confidence level ever since they started working with Erinn has completely changed. When they perform on stage it is like watching two different kids.

Thank you Erinn!”

Raquel V

Parent

“Erinn’s enthusiasm brings out the best of her students and helps improve their self esteem.”
Mr. K

Teacher

“Karen is so fun and enthusiastic and passionate about helping the kids have the best experience possible.  She helps children understand the basics of participating in a performance, from the reality of getting a role, to rehearsing as a team, to preparing on their own, and then bringing their best to the production.  All the while, she is consistently positive and encouraging which makes for a really uplifting atmosphere.  I helped with several workshops because I truly enjoyed being a part of the fun!  I’ve seen very shy kids gain confidence over the years because of their participation in Karen’s workshops; they rush to join and are always eager to get to class. The several workshop performances my daughters have been a part of have been such a positive and life-guiding experience for our family!”
